Transforms the way you consume books and other written content
Do you remember the first time you picked up an iPod and realized that the way you perceived and consumed music had changed forever? Unwrapping and trying out my new Kindle Reading 2 was very much like my first iPod experience, only it was revolutionizing the way I consumed information and stories. After using it for a week in various circumstances, the Kindle Reading 2, when considered alongside the Kindle Reading iPhone application, is even more impressive than the 3rd and 4th generation iPods that brought Apple back to life. Even more impressive is that Amazon is an e-commerce company, and is still inexperienced at the consumer electronics game.I absolutely love the Kindle Reading 2 and the Kindle Reading application, and I can’t wait to see what Amazon will cook up next (I have a few thoughts though).
The reason I love the Kindle Reading so much, and which probably explains why even the 1980’s version was successful, is that it puts a library into my pocket. The Kindle Reading’s impact may be similar to the iPod/iPhone, but it is actually even more jarring and revolutionary. I’m surprised that I’m even making that claim but think for second. For decades, we’ve had a way to bring a decent amount of music along with us wherever we went – it was originally called the Walkman. There has never been a way to condense books, newspapers, and magazine into something so convenient before! For someone that actually reads, which according to Steve Jobs isn’t that many people, this is simply awesome.
The Kindle Reading 2 is also a well-designed device that is reminiscent of the iPod, but takes things one step further. Rather than put a ubiquitous music player on every company like iTunes, they built it into the device itself and gave everyone free access to Sprint’s network. While I would never buy a Sprint phone, I will take there network for free (after the upfront Kindle Reading purchase). The device is also sleek and sexy, looking iPod-esque in brushed metal/white plastic trim. The new navigation button works well, and the keyboard (though I rarely use it) feels good to my fingers.
The buttons are also laid out and I’m so glad they put the “Next” buttons on both sides since it makes it so easy to use. Most important is the e-ink screen – its amazing. I am a guy that spends most of his day/night in front of one type of screen or another, and I hate it. The Kindle does not have a screen that taxes the eyes, and allows me to shift some of my time away from the computer for blogs that I would normally read online.
I’m also impressed by the software that Amazon has put together. Everything is intuitive and easy to use, with a full-blown tutorial that starts as soon as you turn the device on. The Kindle Reading Store even features Amazon recommendations. The Kindle Reading iPhone application is a great extension of the Kindle Reading platform and I have already used it extensively, mostly when the Kindle Reading is low on juice or when I’m in a situation where I can’t pull the Kindle Reading out.
However, the Kindle Reading does have its drawbacks. The price-tag is pretty hefty for most people, though I would counter that the value proposition makes up for it (cheaper books, free data access, other intrinsic benefits). I’m positive that future releases will bring the price point down. The battery life is disappointing – with the wireless on, it probably wouldn’t last 20 hours of determined reading. If you turn the wireless off, which you can probably do 95% of the time unless you are a huge blog-reader, the device lasts a very long time. The magazine selection is also limited and has a lot of room to expand. It has some magazines I like, but I would love to see the Economist on it (there is a hack that can get it on your Kindle Reading though).
The newspaper reading experience is also not as good as I would like, at least regarding the Wall Street Journal (the only newspaper I read) – there needs to be better indexing so that readers can skip the stuff they don’t want to read. Finally, the biggest problem is that you can tell Amazon isn’t finished developing the Kindle Reading platform. The hardware has increased significantly, but there is room for improvement. The software can also be improved through the inclusion of things like RSS readers, a real Internet browser, and additional cool features like Text-to-Speech.
As I said before, I absolutely love this device. It is a great weapon in the road warriors arsenal, allowing travelers to bring their library on the road without using much valuable carry-on space. The Kindle Reading provides anonymity to those readers who are into “romance” novels. It changes the way you consume and perceive written content in the same way the iPod transformed music – it makes it more accessible, convenient, and portable. The Kindle Reading application also works well together and will only get better.
