Stop the Car thief with your iPhone – remote control of your vehicle possible
A short SMS (text message) is sent to the stolen car, and the car will gradually slow down and come to a stop. This is the new system a group of students in the U.S.A has developed. The SMS communicate directly with the car and will give the car driver of the stolen vehicle a unpleasant surprise.
Engineer students at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon have recently developed a system that combine cell phone technology and electronic systems in the cars. During few seconds after receiving the SMS, the car will grind to a halt and the police authorities will be able to take the car thieves into custody as they know where the car is located, and it can not drive anywhere.
There is built in a time delay in the system, which enables the driver to get off the road before it comes to a complete stop. After the SMS is sent, the car will during a period of 30 seconds gradually come down to a speed of 30 km/ hour before it stops completely.
After the car has stopped, the system will automatically send a SMS back to the owner of the vehicle and tell where it is located.
An integrated GPS system localizes the car and you can inform the police or collect the car yourself. This is a prototype system at the moment and will have a price tag around 700 USD pr car when it comes to the market.
In 2007 there was demonstrated a similar system where a SMS message could be sent and localize the car. This system proved to be so effective that some insurance companies demanded this system installed before they would insure your vehicle.
The difference from that system and the prototype developed at the University of Saskatchewan is that the new sysem will also be able to stop the car in addition to localize it.

The connection is made from the phone to a Bluetooth-enabled key-fob that then connects to the car. According to Delphi, that gives geeks the opportunity to connect to their vehicle from a mile away.
Beyond the aforementioned features, the system can start or stop the car, roll down the windows, check tire pressure, monitor oil and brake fluid life, as well as detecting if the car has been broken into. If and when the system is ready for primetime, Delphi expects it to be available for a number of smart phones.
